Speech and language services are available for eligible children. Speech therapy targets articulation, receptive and expressive communication, oral motor skills, fluency, and voice. Articulation is the development of speech sounds.

Therapy is provided to students who cannot pronounce age appropriate sounds. Receptive language focuses on the comprehension of what the child hears, such as understanding stories, questions, and directions. Expressive language therapy involves a total communication approach (point, sign, picture board, words, grammatically correct sentence) that is tailored to meet the child's individual ability level so he or she can express wants and needs.

Language Games:

  • A fun way to increase a child's understanding of speech and vocabulary is to play the guessing game "I Spy."  Example: The leader says, "I spy something red," and encourage the child to guess what they see.
  • To teach spatial concepts and following directions, hide a favorite toy in the home and then give glues to help the child find it. Example: "It is under a chair, it is under a chair in the kitchen."
